Sand dune biodiversity Significance in Odisha: Conservation and management perspectives

PCCF WL & CWLW through

DFO, Chilika WL Division

Odisha is one of the four maritime states bordering the Bay of Bengal. The state has a coastline of about 480 km which constitutes 8% of the Indian coastline. Coast line traverses seven coastal districts and coastline itself yields significant biodiversity. Sand dune is one of the unique ecosystems and sustain major portion of the biodiversity. One year study revealed 70 species of flora, and 314 species of fauna occurring in this ecosystem of Odisha. Further relative abundance of species would be enumerated in selected sampling sites in 2020-21. In addition to this the microbial diversity and utility study in sand dune is being carried out. One year field study was completed and interim report is to be submitted to PCCF (WL) & CWLW, Odisha.
